House Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room, the Way Pros Clean
A house cleaning checklist lists every task, room by room, so nothing gets missed. Work top to bottom and dry to wet in each room: dust high surfaces first, then wipe, then do the floors last on your way out. The checklist below covers a professional standard clean, with deep clean and move-out add-ons and a schedule for keeping up between cleans.
It’s written for two readers: homeowners who want a complete list, and new cleaners who want a standard to quote and work from. It’s part of our Cleaning Business guide.

Move-out cleaning checklist
An empty home shows everything, and landlords check the spots furniture used to hide. On top of every task in the room lists and the deep clean column above, add:
- Inside every cabinet, drawer and closet shelf, after the owner has emptied them.
- Inside the oven, fridge, freezer, microwave and dishwasher.
- Light fixtures, outlet covers and switch plates.
- Scuffs and marks on walls and doors, where the paint allows.
- Floors where furniture stood, including the edges along the walls.
Daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedule
Between full cleans, small habits keep a home in shape. Cleaners can hand this schedule to clients after a deep clean.
| How often | Tasks |
|---|---|
| Daily | Dishes, wipe kitchen counters, quick tidy, empty overflowing trash |
| Weekly | Bathrooms, dust, vacuum and mop, change sheets, empty all trash |
| Monthly | Baseboards, inside the microwave, wipe cabinet fronts, wash shower curtain |
| Every few months | Inside the oven and fridge, windows and tracks, ceiling fans, behind furniture |
Cleaning or disinfecting: which does a house need?
Most homes need cleaning, not disinfecting, on a normal visit. According to the CDC, cleaning with soap, water and scrubbing removes most germs, dirt and impurities, while disinfecting uses stronger chemicals to kill germs and is mainly needed when someone is sick or at higher risk.
When you do disinfect, the EPA’s six steps for disinfectant use come down to this: use an EPA-registered product, read the directions, clean dirty surfaces first, and keep the surface wet for the full contact time on the label. The CDC also says not to mix products or chemicals with each other.

Frequently asked questions
In what order should you clean a house?
Room by room, top to bottom and dry to wet: dust first, then wipe surfaces, then floors. Do the kitchen and bathrooms first since they take longest, and finish by vacuuming and mopping your way out the door.
What’s the difference between a standard clean and a deep clean?
A standard clean keeps a home tidy: surfaces, bathrooms, kitchen and floors. A deep clean adds detail work like baseboards, inside appliances, grout and window tracks, so it takes noticeably longer.
What should be on a move-out cleaning checklist?
Everything in a deep clean, plus the inside of every cabinet, drawer, closet and appliance, light fixtures and switch plates, wall scuffs and the floor where furniture stood.
How long does a standard house clean take?
Housecall Pro estimates 2 to 4 hours for a standard clean of a 2,000 sq ft home, depending on the detail, the number of cleaners and the condition of the home. Time your own jobs room by room to get your real number. Source.
Do I need to disinfect every time I clean?
Usually not. The CDC says cleaning removes most germs, and disinfecting is mainly needed when someone is sick or at higher risk of getting sick. Source.
